Northrop Grumman's heritage in unmanned ground systems began with the challenges encountered by UK MoD Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel in addressing the terrorist threat in the early 1970s. From very simple beginnings, the first Wheelbarrow bomb disposal vehicles were developed and have evolved with advances in technology offering increased capability to the EOD operator. The Wheelbarrow has now developed to Revolution, and is regarded by EOD specialists’ world-wide as the most capable and reliable unmanned vehicle available.
Today, Wheelbarrow is in service throughout the world in the most demanding of operating scenarios. The vehicle is unmatched for its combination of speed, dexterity, reach and payload capabilities. As the supplier of generic tele-operated systems to the EOD community we bring unique field experience and realism in terms of manufacturing practicalities.
Wheelbarrow remains the product of choice across the world and there is considerable work underway to develop its capability still further. We continue at the same time to invest in other product development activity. This was demonstrated in December 2006 when, after a long and competitive exercise, we were awarded the contract to deliver the new fleet of EOD vehicles to the UK MoD. This programme sealed REMOTEC UK’s reputation as the benchmark for remote bomb disposal operations, as it has been now for more than twenty years.
